PROCESSIONAL-Rev. Larry Brown (with cross) is followed by Rev. Hank Mitchel and the Church of the Epiphany congregation during groundbreaking ceremonies last week. The church is building a new multipurpose education building at its Oak Park site.

The entire congregation of The Church of the Epiphany Episcopal in Oak Park participated in a groundbreaking ceremony last Sunday for the church’s new multi-purpose education building.

The traditional-style church with its steeple and stained glass windows sits on a hill at the corner of Kanan Road and Churchwood Drive, across the street from Oak Hills Elementary School.

The new six-classroom building will be built next to the church and attached hall. Construction is scheduled to start before summer, and a completed building is expected to be operational before the end of the year.

"One of Epiphany’s main focuses is serving our local community, and these new multipurpose rooms will enable us to do just that," said The Rev. Hank Mitchel, priest at Epiphany.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, the congregation joined the symbolic digging, which included children carrying toy shovels and plastic dump trucks, while building committee members staked out the future structure with yellow tape.

"We raised a million dollars from within our congregation," said building committee co-chair, Marcus Baukol. "It was so exciting to see everyone come together for this exciting project."

The Episcopal Church welcomes new members every Sunday during services at 8 and 10 a.m.
