Benkert steps down as head coach at Oaks

The coaching carousel continues at Oaks Christian High.

Jim Benkert has resigned as head coach of the school’s football team, according to multiple sources.

Just a few months ago, Benkert led the Lions to the CIF-Southern Section Division 2 championship. Benkert sported a 31-7 record in three seasons as head coach at Oaks Christian.

Mike Sherrard, a former wide receiver at UCLA and in the NFL, has had his name float around as a possible successor, according to multiple sources. Sherrard coached wide receivers at Oaks Christian and Newbury Park locally, and he spent the past two years assisting at Alemany.


CIF-Southern Section winter playoffs are heating up in Acorn country.

Tonight in girls’ basketball, Oaks Christian plays host to Alemany in Division 1. In Division 2AA, Agoura travels to top-ranked Redondo Union. Viewpoint, a Division 3AA team, is at Cabrillo. In Division 4AA, Oak Park plays at San Bernardino to take on Pacific.

In girls’ soccer, Westlake hits the road tonight against Hart in a Division 1 opener. In Division 2, Oaks Christian plays host to San Marcos and Agoura travels to San Luis Obispo. In Division 4, Viewpoint is home against El Segundo at 3 p.m. today.

Agoura and Oaks Christian girls’ water polo teams also begin their playoff marches today.
