Baseball season opens with flair

Agoura PONY Baseball kicked off its 2011 spring season with a festive opening day ceremony at Agoura High School on March 5. Actor Larkin Campbell welcomed guests to the event, and thanked APB volunteers.

Agoura PONY Baseball has six divisions and 58 teams, including two “champion” teams for children with disabilities. Starting with the youngest players in the Shetland Division, each team paraded down the field dressed in full uniform.

Robert Shaver, president of the league, said the goal of the league was to “develop super youngsters not superstars.”

Mark Smith, vice president of operations, said the APB Gives Back Program aims to raise $5,000 for The Painted Turtle, a camp for ill children with chronic illnesses started by late actor Paul Newman. Last year, some families put money aside for the cause every time their child hit a home run, while others banked funds when their child made a hit of any kind.

Christopher Reilly, a Lindero Canyon Middle School student, sang the national anthem.
