Ban the bag now

Calabasas community has sent a message to the state legislature. We will not wait for you to initiate the change needed in plastic pollution policy; rather, we will do it ourselves. The recently passed plastic bag ordinance is yet another highly commendable example of proactive change initiated from the bottom up.

While the American Chemistry Council was able to kill the statewide bill in the Senate last August, it has not inhibited communities around the state from continuing the momentum generated towards addressing this issue. Calabasas has successfully joined this group of proactive communities determined to perpetuate the statewide movement of resolving this harmful practice.

Yet the citizens of Calabasas have not only sent a message to the legislature, but to all communities throughout the state of California— the time is now for us to spearhead this issue. The only question is, will others initiate the change they wish to see, or wait idly by? We must encourage others to act as the community of Calabasas has acted. Cameron Harris Sacramento
