Back to school means watch for pedestrians

Fall is approaching, and with it comes the new school year. Parents, children and motorists are reminded to practice personal and traffic safety when traveling to and from school.

•Motorists should be aware that large numbers of children will be on the sidewalks and crossing streets before and after school.

•Motorists should be alert for sudden incursions into the roadway by youngsters riding bicycles or walking to and form schools.

•Parent/drivers should allow ample time to drive their children to schools, not double park to let students out of the car and be patient while waiting to drop off or pick up students.

•Drivers should avoid activities that distract them while driving, such as adjusting a radio/CD player, talking with passengers or on a hands-free cellphone, eating or drinking. Talking on a handheld cellphone while driving is illegal.

•Parents should discuss traffic safety and laws with children.

•The law requires bicycle riders under 18 to wear helmets.

•Children should cross streets only at marked crosswalks and with the pedestrian walk light. Motorists should carefully check marked crosswalks for pedestrians before proceeding through.

If motorists and children obey traffic laws and practice common courtesy, most accidents would be avoided.
