Author to discuss eating disorders

Author Jenni Schaefer will give a presentation on “Declaring Independence from Eating Disorders: A Personal Journey,” from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Wed., Aug. 8 at A Step in Time School of Dance, 4504 Las Virgenes Road, Calabasas.

The event is sponsored by Center for Change and hosted by Step In Time director, Dawn Smith-Theodore. Schaefer is the author of “Life Without Ed: How One Woman Declared Independence from Her Eating Disorder and How You Can Too.”

Psychotherapist Thom Rutledge treated Schaefer’s long-standing battle with anorexia and bulimia with the technique of “splitting her personality,” that is “establishing a metaphor to help people gain a perspective on their problems,” according to Rutledge. He encouraged Schaefer to think of “Ed,” an acronym for eating disorder, as a person separate from “Jenni.”

“I felt a tremendous amount of relief once I knew that there was more to me than just my eating disorder. With lots of patience and persistence, I was finally able to divorce Ed,” said Schaefer.

Schaefer is a consultant for the Center for Change in Orem, Utah. She has appeared on “Dr. Phil” and “Entertainment Tonight.” Her work has been featured in the Chicago Tribune, The Washington Times, Cosmopolitan, Cosmogirl, and Woman’s World.

Admission is free and open to the public. RSVP is requested by Aug. 6 to Melanie Aldis at (310) 633-4834 or send an e-mail to maldis@centerforchange.com.
