Attention all writers: Pen your best fiction

Listen up all storytellers: Entries are being accepted in The Acorn’s 2021 Fiction in a Nutshell competition, which calls for complete stories of 100 words or fewer (title not included).

All topics are invited. Fiction only (no memoir or real-life tales).

This is the contest’s 12th year, and popular genres include science fiction, romance, comedy, adventure and horror. Each year stories include animals, humor, emotions, danger and despair— and surprise endings that leave us amazed.

Your story must be a completely original work; only one entry per person. Strive for creativity in plot, characters and literary style.

Entries must be previously unpublished; no prior internet, blog or social media postings. Enter one of two age categories: under 18 years old and 18 and over. The winner in each group will receive a $100 prize and will see their stories published in The Acorn newspaper and online. Runners-up will also be spotlighted.

Email your tale to newstip@theacorn.com and include name, age and city of residence.

The submission deadline is Fri, Oct. 29. Winners will be published Thurs., Nov. 11.
