Arrest made in Calabasas condo fire

A fire destroyed a Calabasas condominium last Friday afternoon in a blaze believed to be caused by arson.

The fire began around 2:30 p.m. on June 11 at a condo in the 4200 block of Las Virgenes Road near the intersection with Willow Glen Street. No one was injured in the blaze.

One person was arrested, The Acorn learned. The circumstances surrounding the fire remain under investigation.

Firefighters from the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to the scene and extinguished the flames within 15 minutes, said Capt. Sheila Kelliher from the department.

“Only the ground-floor unit was damaged. The condo above it got a little bit of smoke damage but it’s safe to go back inside. The tenant just has to let it air out, but (the top unit) didn’t get damaged,” Kelliher said.

Fire department personnel had their work at the condo wrapped up by 5 P.M.

Sgt. Chris Soderlund of the Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station said the station is handling the investigation for the time being.

“Our arson and explosives investigators are on-scene and are still conducting an investigation,” Sgt. Chris Soderlund of the Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station said.

“We work in conjunction with the fire department, but if there’s a crime involved we’re the lead agency. Until the incident is determined not to be a crime we take the lead on investigating.”
