A dance musical based on an Indian epic will grace the stage of the Scherr Forum Theater at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza at 7:30 p.m. Sat., Aug. 16 when the Shakti Dance Company presents "Bhagvad Gita."

Conceived as a dance musical, the "Bhagvad Gita" is a multimedia presentation with stunning costumes and jewelry, specially created stage effects, props and lighting. It presents a synergy of dance, theater, music and chanting.

The Bhagvad Gita is the Song Divine that Lord Krishna spoke to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra and is essentially about the human conflict between dharma (righteousness) and adharma (unrighteousness).

The production will feature noted Hindustanu vocalist Lakshmi Shankar and special chanting by Palai Ramachandran, a senior carnatic vocalist of India plus other vocalists, musicians and a troupe of dancers who perform a 3,000-year-old dance tradition called Bharata Natayam.

Tickets range from $20-$35 and are available at the box office or by calling (805) 449-2787. For more information on the performance, call (818) 991-0742.
