Agoura Hills still waits
for new fire station

The new Agoura Hills fire station, already more than three years in the planning, won’t be finished until 2003, according to a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Station 89 will be located near an environmentally sensitive stream and has had to undergo several design modifications, said Mike Dyer, assistant fire chief.

Original plans called for a 13,500 square-foot facility on a three-acre site between the Agoura Hills Medical Plaza and the Chateau Park condominiums on Canwood Street. Dyer said the final design that’s expected to receive county public works approval in October calls for a fire station under 10,000 square feet.

Fire protection for the city currently comes from stations in Westlake Village, Oak Park or Cornell Road in rural Agoura. The new station will be the first within city limits. Officials said the station will enable quicker response time for fires north of the 101 Freeway.

Station 89 will have one fire engine, one captain, one engineer and three firefighters. It also will house a paramedic unit.

"It’s going to be nice to have the fire engine and the paramedic squad on this side of the freeway," Dyer said.

The engine company and paramedics are transferring from Station 65 at Cornell.

The estimated $1.5 million project will have a firefighter training facility that includes meeting and community rooms. The station also will serve as battalion chief headquarters.

Construction is expected to begin next July.

Agoura Hills will become the 12th fire station in Los Angeles County Battalion Five, which includes Westlake Village, Calabasas, Hidden Hills and Malibu. The county also has a mutual-assistance agreement with Ventura County’s Oak Park fire station on Deerhill Road.

Ventura County recently opened Station 37, a 4,500 square-foot station in North Ranch.
