Agoura Hills puts old recreation center on shelf in favor of new one

‘We listened to the community and this is the ideal property’

The city of Agoura Hills announced it has purchased property with an existing building adjacent to the Agoura Hills Civic Center to become the city’s new recreation center.

The 7-acre parcel at Ladyface Court directly above and to the south of Agoura Hills City Hall will cost $4.4 million. But how much it will cost to convert the 15,000-square-foot building on the property into a rec center isn’t known.

Relocating the current recreation center on Thousand Oaks Boulevard is necessary because the city’s lease will expire in 2014, Community Services Director Amy Brink said.

The city has outgrown its present location, she said.

“ Agoura Hills residents, particularly seniors and youth, are desiring more of the recreation department’s affordable community recreation and selfimprovement classes,” Brink said. “With the lease expiring on our current facility, we are taking proactive measures to continue to provide the com- munity with recreation programs without interruption.”

The building was Temple Beth Haverim’s former home and has been vacant about ayear.

“We listened to the community and this is the ideal property,” said Brink. “It has an existing building we can renovate so there is no impact on open or current park space and it can accommodate new teen and senior center components.”

The projected completion date for the new rec center is the end of 2012.

Officials say the city achieved its goal of consolidating civic and recreation services into one location.

“All civic services being centralized for residents into a complex was a green and synergistic option for the city,” Agoura Hills administrative analyst Chris Dodd. said.
