Action taken to control guns

I was extremely distraught to hear of another mass shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas.

I am deeply saddened that what to me is a public health and safety issue has become so political and divisive. We should all be concerned about the basic safety and well-being of our children as well as the population as a whole.

When motorcycle helmet laws were instituted, they significantly reduced the number of deaths from motorcycle collisions. Why should common-sense gun laws be any different?

As a mother and volunteer with the Conejo Valley chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, I want to see this change.

Moms Demand Action is a part of the gun-violence-prevention movement. We support the Second Amendment and know that it goes hand-in-hand with common-sense gun laws and a culture of gun safety.

We are not anti-gun; we are anti-gun violence and pro-gun safety.

On June 2 we will be recognizing this movement by celebrating Wear Orange, the National Gun Violence Awareness Day.

We are so pleased that the mayor of Thousand Oaks, Andrew Fox, has come out in support of this very important event by signing a proclamation for the city recognizing this important day.

We plan to host a Party in the Park at Conejo Creek Park in Thousand Oaks to recognize survivors and educate people about this very important public health and safety issue.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to noon and will include kids’ activities, food trucks, educational booths and more.

We hope to see every concerned citizen there.
