Local news 30 years ago reflected the peaceful, bucolic nature of the Conejo Valley.

The debut performance of the Lindero Canyon Middle School’s Jazz Ensemble took place this week in 1975.

The group joined the school’s concert band, intermediate band, and percussion ensemble to present a winter concert directed by Vera Daehlin.

Music performed by the more than 200 musicians included pieces by Neil Diamond. Tickets were 50 cents.

Male vocalists, particularly tenors, were sought for Village Voices, the choral group directed by Ed Lojeski, a local composer of musical scores and arrangements. The group was preparing for a spring concert.

The Walt Disney film about airplanes, "The Sky’s the Limit," aired on NBC this week. Several scenes and flying sequences in the movie were filmed over Agoura and Thousand Oaks.

The stunts were performed by a Santa Paula pilot named Mike Dewey.

Although Christmas was several weeks past, remnants of the holiday were strewn along a one-mile stretch of Cheseboro Road.

High winds had blown gift wrap from the refuse dump site east of Cheseboro. The Acorn recommended that the colorful debris be cleaned up by the county.

The Las Virgenes Unified School District began accepting bids to sell $1.7 million in school construction bonds with a maximum interest rate of 7 percent. Local investors were encouraged to participate in the bond sale as a sound investment in their own community.

A quote from a local unidentified 11-year-old appeared in the newspaper.

The girl was overheard describing politics to her younger sister: "Politics is a group of people who try to do something and never can."

The Acorn will be taking a look back at our first year’s issues over the next 12 months, giving an historical perspective on "30 Years Ago in The Acorn."
