Acorn fiction contest begins

In today’s world of apps where the writing and thinking are often done for you, The Acorn places high value on personal creativity.

One of the newspaper’s most popular and enduring competitions is Fiction in a Nutshell, and this year the longtime contest returns.

Entries are officially being accepted for the 2019 Fiction in a Nutshell competition, which calls for submissions of 100 words or fewer (title not included) in which you must write an original fiction tale about any topic you wish.

Popular genres include science fiction, romance, comedy, adventure and even horror. Each year we have animals, emotions, danger and despair—and several surprise endings that leave us howling.

Your story must be a completely original work of fiction and no more than 100 words. Enter one of two categories: under 18 years old and 18 and over. Only one entry per person.

Winners receive a $100 prize and will see their stories published.

Email your fiction tale to newstip@theacorn.com and include name, age and city of residence. The deadline for submissions is Thurs., Sept. 26. Winners will be published in The Acorn newspaper and online Thurs., Oct. 17.
