On Christmas Eve 1986, the Westlake water polo team was given a present—only it was a present that couldn’t be opened for another 14 years. That gift was not one, but two future Warrior polo standouts, fraternal twins John and Nick Weaver.

Currently seniors on the Westlake varsity team, the Weavers are one of five sets of siblings in the program, but the only ones that share the same birthday. Brothers and best friends, the duo first played water polo together in middle school, when Nick followed his younger brother (by a minute) into the pool.

"Growing up in Westlake near the ocean I had always been comfortable in the water, and I just picked (water polo) up really quickly," John said. "I loved it right away. I was in it a season before he was and then he decided he wanted to join. He asked if it was ‘OK,’ and I was like ‘sure.’"

After two seasons with South Coast Water Polo Club in junior high, the boys moved on to Westlake and immediately got involved with the team. Having spent countless hours together in the pool, the Weavers have become an effective weapon for the Warriors, a team that is close both in and out of the pool, just like the brothers.

"We’re each others best friends, it’s crazy," Nick said. "He and I have been doing sports together forever, and we always wanted to compete against each other . . . competition has played a big role in our relationship.

"No matter what we’re doing we try to out-do one another," he continued. "Even if we go surfing together, someone has to try to get the biggest wave."

Though they’ve always shared a passion for sports, the water and the USC Trojans, the twins also claim a number of notable differences. Nick is the easy-going artist and graphic designer with crafty skills in the pool. John, who dreams of one day becoming a NAVY Seal, is the aggressive competitor who refuses to back down to any opponent.

"We are different, but we are closer than anybody out there and we use that to our advantage," John said. "We work really well together. . . . He does what needs to be done, I take it up to the next level."

Part-time lifeguards at a Westlake Village pool, the close-knit brothers have aspirations of staying in close touch, even after graduation—hopefully, as members of their beloved Trojans.

"Even if it isn’t for a few years, we both want to end up at USC," Nick said. "We’d love the chance to play together again on a higher level and see what we can do."
