Thousand Oaks Acorn
editor Steve Holt retired Sept. 24 following a more than 20-year career with the weekly newspaper chain.

Kyle Jorrey, former Simi Valley
Acorn
editor, replaces Holt. Joann Groff, former Moorpark Acorn
editor, becomes the new editor in Simi Valley. Reporter Scott Tittrington was named editor of the Moorpark
Acorn.

Holt became the editor in May 1998 of what would later be identified in a community survey as the mostread local newspaper in Thousand Oaks. He’d been with the Acorn
Newspapers for about 10 years before publishers Jim and Lisa Rule gave the city its own weekly community paper and gave Holt the reins.

“A community newspaper is more than just a job. It’s a mirror of the community—the good and not so good—and it makes a difference,” Holt said.

Holt is especially proud of the way readers would respond when alerted to a story about their neighbors’ needs. A recent Acorn
article about the troubles facing the local food bank Manna resulted in thousands of dollars in food and cash flowing in—making it possible for those in need to have dinner on their tables, Holt said.

He said he plans to spend a great deal of his retirement helping others as a member of the Kiwanis

Club of Thousand Oaks. And, of course, crossing off the long list of jobs his wife, Mangala Patil-Holt, a practicing Newbury Park dentist, has prepared for him.

Holt, who was born in Iowa, has three children and two grandchildren. He served in Vietnam, where he was trained in the dental field. He spent years in dental supply sales after he returned home.

About 20 years ago, he decided on a midlife career change to pursue a passion for writing. He went to Pepperdine University and studied journalism prior to joining The Acorn.

“Those who follow (me) will keep the standards high and keep raising the bar,” Holt said.

Following his 2004 graduation from Pepperdine University, Jorrey joined The Acorn
as a sports editor. He later became news reporter before being named editor of the Simi Valley
Acorn
in August 2006. For much of the past year he also served as editor of the Moorpark Acorn.

Groff replaced Jorrey in July as the editor of the Moorpark paper. Now she will replace him as the Simi Valley Acorn
editor.

Groff is a 2005 graduate of Pepperdine where she spent four years working at the university’s student newspaper, The Graphic,
as both news editor and editor in chief. She joined The Acorn
as a staff writer in August 2006 after working for a year at a daily newspaper in Central California.

Tittrington joined the Moorpark

Acorn
as a staff writer in June after a stint as editorial operations chief for two weekly newspapers in Culver City. Before that he worked as a sports editor for four weekly newspapers in Missouri and won several awards. He also served as an assistant sports editor in Florida.

Tittrington graduated from Brigham Young University in 2007 with a degree in communications.

John Loesing, The Acorn
editor and the company’s managing editor, and Dan Wolowicz, Camarillo

Acorn
editor, remain in their current positions.

The Acorn, Simi Valley Acorn,
Thousand Oaks Acorn, Moorpark

Acorn
and Camarillo Acorn
are distributed weekly to a combined 144,000 homes and businesses.
