Abandoned rabbits need homes

The County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control is rescuing rabbits that have been illegally abandoned on the island at Alondra Park in Torrance. Animal Control and the L.A. County Department of Parks and Recreation are working together to safely remove the rabbits from the island.

Animal Control and Parks and Recreation have been monitoring and caring for the rabbits on the island, and will continue to provide food and water to the remainder of the rabbits that inhabit the park until all are removed. Agencies are working together to enhance fences, place signs and install cameras, and are taking all measures to ensure that no more rabbits are illegally abandoned.

In the meantime, Animal Control is seeking help from the public to adopt the rabbits and the other rabbits in county animal care centers. As rabbits are removed from the island, the agency will take them into the Carson animal care center, where they will receive a medical evaluation and examination, and be spayed or neutered.

To encourage adoptions, the agency is discounting rabbit adoptions to $25 through the end of the year. The $25 includes adoption and sterilization.

Rabbits are generally lowmaintenance animals and require the same amount of attention and socialization as a cat or dog. They need regular interaction with humans in order to stay socialized. They also require about one hour each day out of their cage to play and exercise. Rabbits can also be easily litter box trained, making them suitable pets for apartments or small homes.

To adopt a rabbit, visit the Agoura Animal Shelter at 29525 Agoura Road.

Animal Control reminds the public that abandoning an animal in Los Angeles County is a misdemeanor, punishable by a $1,000 fine and up to six months in jail.
