A season of magical shows

Meet a sleep-deprived princess and a magical nanny who loves to “Feed the Birds” during Young Artists Ensemble’s 38th season.

The theater company’s family friendly “Season of Unexpected Magic” will open with the fun and feisty fairy-tale musical “Once Upon a Mattress.” An untraditional princess from the swamp tosses and turns all night because of one little pea. Will the kingdom find its happily-ever-after in the morning?

This raucous, irreverent retelling of the “Princess and the Pea” runs Nov. 2 to 18.

Next, audiences will journey across the universe and see the magic in the mundane with “The Little Prince,” a beautiful and lyrical story based on the book by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry about a little boy who finds magic in everyone and everything he encounters throughout the universe.

“The Little Prince” runs Feb. 1 through 17, 2019. An additional weekend of shows will feature performances by members of Conejo Theatre for Everyone.

From May 3 to 19, 2019, YAE will journey to Edwardian London where a spoonful of sugar helps a dour family find joy in “Mary Poppins Jr.”

Season tickets are available starting at $30 for adults, children, students and seniors for the Super Discount Friday performances on the second or third Fridays of each production.

Patrons can tailor their season for $39 adults and $33 children, students and seniors. Individual tickets are $19 for adults and $16 for children, students and seniors.

A discount for groups of 10 or more for a single performance only is available. The group discount is not valid for season tickets. To purchase tickets, call (805) 381-1246 or visit yaeonline.com.

At the 13th annual National Youth Arts Awards in June, YAE received 19 nominations and four wins for its 2017-18 productions.
