Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

Got away with murder? Attorney says no

GUEST OPINION /// Bryn Spejcher sentencing

I am writing in response to the unwarranted smear against the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office and Ventura County Superior Judge David Worley contained in an opinion piece written by Mitchell Bruckner of the public defender’s office titled “She ‘literally got away with murder.’” Mr. Bruckner’s false contentions cannot go unanswered. I was one of the attorneys who represented Bryn […]

Preserve our communities, but let’s be realistic

EDITORIAL

New homes? Yes. Next to my backyard? Never. And so goes the continual push-pull between local cities and developers trying to meet the state’s demand that they build not just new homes, but affordable ones, —and residents of the community who prefer to see no new housing at all. The argument from opponents whenever new homes or apartments are proposed […]

It’s election season, what’s on your mind?

EDITORIAL

Voter guides and sample ballots arrived in homes this week. We guess that means it’s officially election season, though did it ever end? As we approach the California primary in March and then the general election in November, the Acorn Newspapers traditionally start seeing an uptick in letters to the editor voicing opinions about issues and candidates. We welcome and […]

She ‘literally got away with murder’

GUEST OPINION /// Bryn Spejcher sentencing

I am an L.A. County Public Defender and father of a close friend of Chad O’Melia, the young man who was tragically stabbed to death by Bryn Spejcher. I am not writing on behalf of my office, but as someone who has followed the prosecution of this case very closely and attended much of the court proceedings. I feel compelled […]

New, shorter Acorn still long on tradition

EDITORIAL

When you pick up this week’s Acorn newspaper you will see big changes afoot. Or, small, depending on how you look at it. The first thing to notice is that our pages are physically smaller than those in the tabloid-size edition that’s been delivered to homes and businesses over the years—each page about four inches shorter, to be exact. That […]

Keeping bicyclists, motorists safe is two-way street

EDITORIAL

Riding a bike is good for body, mind and soul. Pedaling to school or a friend’s house gives kids a healthy dose of exercise and an early taste of freedom. For adults, it can bring back memories of a carefree childhood—exploring neighborhoods with a fresh perspective. Biking can also be a practical mode of transport for quick errands and it […]
