Acorn online content now offered free

'Paywall' removed

The new millennium has been a transformative time for newspaper publishing.

Changing reader habits and the advent of new technology have placed big demands on companies in the print news business.

The Acorn and its parent company, Times Media Group, understand that their biggest responsibility is not only the delivery of credible, relevant information in a timely fashion, but making sure residents have easy access to the publication when stories become available.

That’s why we’re super excited about the news being shared today.

Following a five-year stretch in which Acorn readers were given the option of purchasing online subscriptions to the paper, that so-called “paywall” is coming down.

“Mr. Publisher, tear down this wall,” the late President Ronald Reagan might have once said.

And so we did.

Starting immediately, all online content from our five Acorn publications will be available at no charge to the reader, meaning a paid subscription is no longer required to click and read articles. The weekly Acorn has always been delivered to your driveway at no cost—that more than 40-year tradition will continue—and from now on The Acorn on the internet will be free as well.

Why the change?

The Acorn is your community newspaper, and we want to make sure it stays that way. We believe it’s important that residents feel a connection to the stories we write and also learn about the businesses that advertise in their community. The absence of a paywall is the best way to ensure this free-flow of information remains.

We also invite readers to sign up for the new, easy-to-read Acorn newspaper e-edition delivered weekly to your e-mail. Viewed on mobile, desktop or laptop, the pages are super easy to navigate and, free, just like the print paper.

Local journalism is first gear in the engine that drives America’s free press, and a free press it shall be.

More than one way to score that perfect job

EDITORIAL

Persistent stress can make the mind spin, lead to illness and ruin relationships. The constant push to get things done and live up to expectations is a heavy burden. For many, the emotional toll starts in high school. As students begin mulling over career options and building a future, the pressure to perform gets real. In addition to earning top […]

Advocate seeks justice for renters

In a recent article, “As living costs go up, what’s in your wallet?,” the reporter noted that AvalonBay Communities is dramatically raising rents in Calabasas. As the advocacy journalist for Housing Is A Human Right in Los Angeles, I’m not surprised by that finding. AvalonBay is one of several corporate landlords embroiled in the ongoing RealPage scandal, in which a […]

The drought is over, so act like it

Las Virgenes Municipal Water District is still fighting the last war, the California drought, by continuing to pursue a recycling toilet/sewer water to tap (T2T) policy. The changing climate direction is resulting in regular atmospheric river rain storms, excellent Sierra snowpack, water reservoirs brimming over and the state relaxing water rationing rules. The changing climate mandates this water strategy be […]

Wake up and smell the chem trails

What are those bizarre white stripes in the sky? On a nearly daily basis we are sprayed with fake “clouds” called chemtrails, aka stratospheric aerosol geoengineering or solar radiation management—found to contain nanoparticles of toxic metallic elements—primarily aluminum and barium but also strontium, manganese, thorium and other unknown elements. We are told that this is a benefit to protect us […]

Failing to close the Southern border

The essential question President Joe Biden will not answer is why he will not close the southern border in the face of so much death and suffering. Why won’t he issue an executive order suspending asylum claims until the United States can reorganize its immigration strategy and regulations? There is only one answer: Joe Biden doesn’t care about the situation. […]

What is our obsession with time change?

EDITORIAL

Spring doesn’t officially begin until Tues., March 19, but it sure feels like it’s here with the return of beautiful weather, blue skies and daylight saving time. The annual time change ritual took place last weekend, and by now we’ve all sprung forward. At least most of us have. There might be a few of us whose car dashboard clocks […]

Oak Park should have had more input

Kudos to the Oak Park Municipal Advisory Council for wanting oversight regarding the Rancho Simi Rec and Park pickleball court construction. To date, RSRPD’s projects in Oak Park have not followed the decisions made with the MAC and Oak Park Committee. There are multiple examples for this claim, which I can prove as I am a prior Oak Park MAC […]

What gives with the cops on Erbes?

Late last week I was enjoying a regular walk down Erbes Road just south of Sunset Hills Boulevard. I noticed two sheriff’s deputies on small motorcycles hiding behind bushes at the intersection of Monte Carlo Drive and Erbes. Also, a woman was walking across the adjacent crosswalk. About 45 minutes later as I was returning in the opposite direction, I […]
