Online mail tracking is now available
Introducing Informed Delivery, a nationwide online service that gives people a look at what’s coming to their mailbox before it arrives.
After piloting the new program in select areas, the USPS made the service available to most residential customers across the country as of April 14.
On each mail delivery day, subscribers to the service receive an email that shows scanned images of the front of up to 10 letter-size pieces of mail—flat envelopes from 5- to 11½-inches long that can go through the USPS sorting machines. The service lets users know to expect an important piece of mail, such as a Social Security check or credit card, and if it doesn’t arrive the subscriber can take steps to prevent its contents from being misused by a potential identity thief.
If there are more than 10 letter-size items scheduled for delivery, the subscriber can visit their account page at the Informed Delivery website to view the remainder of the items.
Informed Delivery does not include packages, which customers can follow using the USPS tracking service, or items such as catalogs and magazines, although the postal service plans to add those at some point.
News of the digital notification service is spreading fast on local social media, where people have been expressing qualms about thefts from mailboxes in their neighborhoods.
“We have been having a lot of mail theft in my neighborhood . . . so I decided to sign up for this service. I think it’s a great idea, at the minimum so that we all can be aware in the event something that was stated as delivered did not show up,” Calabasas resident Stephanie Prevo told The Acorn.
She signed up for the informed delivery service about three weeks ago
Consumers enrolled in Informed Delivery can access it through a computer, a tablet or other mobile device.
