Attempted murder reported

By Stephanie Bertholdo

Deputies from the Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station arrested a 27-year-old man in Agoura Hills in connection with an attempted murder Wed., Jan. 9 in Malibu.

Charged in the shooting is Patrick Leach of Malibu, son of Sheryl Leach, creator of the “Barney & Friends” children’s show on public television. Leach is free on $1 million bail.

According to reports, police responded to a call from residents in the 27000 block of West Winding Way in Malibu regarding gunshots that were heard. Upon arrival, deputies found a 49-year-old man, also from Malibu but whose name was not released, sitting on the ground with an apparent gunshot wound to his chest.

A witness told deputies he saw a man leaving the neighborhood in a black sports utility vehicle the morning of the shooting. Other residents in the neighborhood called the Lost Hills station and provided additional information about the suspect, Sgt. Hugo Mosquero told The Acorn.

Later in the day, deputies spotted a vehicle matching the witness’s description on Kanan Road just south of Cornell Road in Agoura Hills and conducted a traffic stop. Evidence was recovered from Leach’s vehicle and he was arrested as a suspect in the attempted murder.

A motive for the shooting has not been revealed, Mosquero said, and the crime remains under investigation by detectives.

Regarding the witnesses who quickly reported the incident, Mosquero said, “These people are neighbors. Everybody here did an outstanding job.”

Mosquero said the victim was treated at UCLA Medical Center and is expected to make a recovery. “The suspect (was) in custody and we’re lucky that nobody else was hurt,” the deputy said.
