No hill too steep for Mountain Mamas
Kiera Goodman A group of Agoura Hills, Westlake Village, Calabasas, Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park women who have been hiking and camping together for more than 20 years, the Mountain Mamas, have shared adventures and raised their children together from nursery school through college and beyond.
Now the Mountain Mamas are joining forces with the New Yorkbased Lustgarten Foundation, a financial supporter for pancreatic cancer research, to participate in a 5K walk/10K run fundraiser starting at 9:15 a.m. Sat., Feb. 11 at Westlake Village City Hall, 31200 Oak Crest Drive.
All money donated to the foundation goes directly to pancreatic cancer research.
The fundraiser is in memory of Kiera Goodman, who was diagnosed at age 33 with pancreatic cancer. Goodman was the daughter of a “Mountain Mamas” member and a resident of Woodland Hills.
Goodman had earned a master’s degree in public health from Johns Hopkins University and then returned to the West Coast to work in Amgen’s research department. Goodman was also building a second career as an actress.
Once diagnosed with the disease, she spent several weeks at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston after learning that she had the same kind of slowgrowing tumor cells as Apple founder Steve Jobs.
During Goodman’s weeks of chemotherapy in 2010, the Mamas and their families got together with shovels and, with plans drawn up by a professional landscaper who volunteered her services, created a healing garden for Kiera to come home to.
The 35-year-old Goodman died of cancer on Jan. 21, 18 months after her initial diagnosis. Services were on Jan. 28 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Westlake. Goodman’s parents live in Westlake Village and her grandmother in Thousand Oaks.
Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading killer among all forms of cancer.
