Mathnasium, a math- only learning center for kids, will soon open its newest location in Oak Park at 630 Lindero Canyon Road next to Fresh & Easy.

The Mathnasium program targets students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade who need to boost their math skills. Homework and test preparation help will also be available.

New Hugo’s at Whizin’s Center

Hugo’s family restaurant opened this week in the renovated Whizin’s Center in Agoura Hills.

The 4,200-square-foot, 120- seat restaurant includes indoor waterfalls and an enclosed porchlike seating area that looks out at Ladyface Mountain.

Co-owner Tom Kaplan went to high school in Agoura Hills, and his father opened the first Hugo’s in West Hollywood 30 years ago. Movie moguls George Lucas and Steven Spielberg were often customers at the restaurant.

Hugo’s also has locations in West Hollywood and Studio City and operates Hugo’s Tacos in Atwater Village and Studio City.

The company is owned and operated by Tom and Emily Kaplan, Richard and Leslie Brenner, and Bill Kohne.

Power to the kids

To help offset the cost of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Conejo & Las Virgenes Power Hour program, the Bank of America Charitable Foundation recently contributed a $5,000 grant towards the program, which is a comprehensive homework help and tutoring plan for club members aged 6 to 18 years.

Stephen Davis, Senior Vice President-Investments at Merrill Lynch, presented the check to the Boys & Girls Clubs on behalf of Bank of America.

Power Hour helps youth develop academic, behavioral and social skills through homework completion.

In 2008, the program was offered in nearly 90 percent of clubs throughout the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
