Western Oak Park to receive much-needed repair work on 14 streets

Residents pleased about the work
By Sylvie Belmond

Many residential streets in unincorporated Oak Park are getting a makeover.

The Ventura County Department of Public Works is paving and repairing 75 surface streets on the west side of the community.

Street closures will occur intermittently between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. and temporary “no parking” signs will be posted at affected locations at least 48 hours before the scheduled work. Residents will be able to get in and out of their driveways and garages during construction. One lane will be kept open to traffic.

The work consists of repairs, resurfacing and restriping in order to provide safer, smoother and longer lasting local roads.

Most roads will be resurfaced with rubberized asphalt, a smooth, generally quiet material, but some smaller roads and cul-de-sacs will be repaved with conventional asphalt.

“Residents are very excited about this project as we have waited a long time for our streets to be smooth again,” said Derek Ross, chair of the Oak Park Municipal Advisory Council.

“This past winter the heavy rainfall really tore our streets up. Although it may be a slight inconvenience while the (repaving) project takes place, it will be well worth it in the long run,” Ross said.

The roadwork will take about four months to complete.

Oak Park has about 33 miles of roads. The county has paved about 13 miles since 2001, and this project will pave another 14 on the west side of the unincorporated community.

Work on the eastern streets in Oak Park will begin late next year and continue into 2013. For a list of scheduled road closures, visit Ross’s website at www.oakparknow.com.
