School board seeks members for control committee

The Oak Park Unified School District Board of Education announced that several positions are open on its Citizens’ Oversight Committee. The volunteer panel is responsible for overseeing the district’s two bond measures and a parcel tax.

Applications will be accepted until Dec. 15.

Committee members will be charged with reviewing the accounts of Measure R, Measure C6 and the Measure C Parcel Tax.

Measure R is a $29.4-million school improvement facilities bond passed by voters in 2008. The money is used only for structural improvements such as new roofing, air conditioning, parking lot resurfacing and other brickand mortar repairs.

Measure C6 is the $17.5-million bond initiative passed by voters in 2006 to pay for technology in the classrooms, including new computers, interactive white boards, lab stations in science classrooms and other equipment.

Measure C extended the $197 per home parcel tax that was passed in 2004.

The Citizens’ Oversight Committee was formed last year to replace three separate committees for each bond measure and the parcel tax. Four positions are open on the panel of 12.

Linda Sheridan, executive assistant to Superintendent Tony Knight, said the positions opened when one couple who served on two committees moved and two other committee members resigned after being elected to local offices: Allen Rosen to the OPUSD Board of Education and Mike McReynolds to the Triunfo Sanitation District.

The oversight committee will meet quarterly, Sheridan said. Members will be responsible for reviewing the audits of the bond measure and parcel tax accounts and giving an annual report to the board of education.

State law requires that the committee consist of at least one of each: an active business member, a senior citizen affiliated with a specific group, and at least one delegate who is a bona fide member of a tax organization. The mix must also include a parent of a child enrolled in an Oak Park school and one who is an active member of a school parent-teacher organization or school site council. Two members from the public at large are also needed.

Sheridan said that all requirements have been met, so community members fitting any of the criteria are welcome to apply for a position.

For an application, call Linda Sheridan at (818) 735-3206 or visit www.oakparkusd.org to download the form. Board members will interview qualified applicants at a public board meeting in January to select the candidates.
