Oak Park High’s rummage sale will help sports

Oak Park High School’s athletic booster club will host a rummage sale on Sat., Oct. 2.

Dhana Stevens, president of the booster club, said the sale will benefit boys’ and girls’ lacrosse, basketball and volleyball teams; the school’s football team; boys’ soccer; and the cheerleading squad.

The sale will be adjacent to the farmers market at the high school, 899 N. Kanan Road, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The booster club ordinarily covers the cost of equipment, referee fees and a portion of the stipend for Brenda Pasqua, the school’s athletic trainer.

“By offsetting these costs, the proceeds from the rummage sale can be used for other necessities, such as uniforms and tournament fees,” Stevens said. “The beauty of the rummage sale is that each team will keep 100 percent of whatever they make. . . .”

“Every coach on staff is trying to find a creative way to raise money so that he or she doesn’t have to ask for as much money from the parents at the beginning of the season,” Stevens said.

Budget cuts have taken a toll on school sports. Assistant Principal Stewart McGugan said coaching stipends were cut by 10 percent.
