Board approves OPHS parking restrictions

Ventura County officials voted last week to prohibit parking northwest of Oak Park High School on a portion of Calle Rio Vista and Oak Hills Drive.

The Oak Park Municipal Advisory Council recommended this spring that parking be permitted on only one side of the narrow cul-de-sac behind Oak Park High School and on Oak Hills Drive to reduce the risk of traffic accidents.

High school students park their cars on the small streets that back up to the high school track and playing fields during school hours. Visitors also park there during sporting events.

To solve other parking concerns near the high school before school resumes, a subcommittee with MAC Chair Mike Green and Vice Chair Mike McReynolds will meet next week with authorities, school leaders and park officials.

The problems occur mostly in cul-de sacs south of the high school near the library on Rockedge Drive and Tranquil Lane.

According to officials, students have been parking in those areas, annoying the homeowners because they block the driveways of homes.

“We already know the problem and we're looking to find solutions,” Green said.
