Triunfo water board becomes popular race
The race is on to represent ratepayers on two local water boards.
As of Monday, 10 people had taken out nomination papers to vie for a seat on the Triunfo Sanitation District board of directors.
Three incumbents filed to serve on the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District board.
The filing period for candidates ends at 5 p.m. Aug. 6.
Triunfo board members administer delivery of potable water in Oak Park and oversee sanitation services for Oak Park, North Ranch, Bell Canyon and the Lake Sherwood/Westlake region of Thousand Oaks.
Due to a change in election rules, the Triunfo Sanitation District board of directors has four seats on the ballot this November. Previously, two of five seats were elected by voters and three were appointed by various Ventura County governments.
Those elected to the board will serve a four-year term.
Candidates who pulled papers for the Triunfo board as of Aug. 2 are incumbent Janna Orkney; Oak Park Municipal Advisory Council members Derek Ross and Michael McReynolds; Bell Canyon resident Steven Price; Thousand Oaks residents Timothy Nanson, Ray Tjulander and James Wall; and Oak Park residents Phil Janke, Dean Fields and Ron Stark.
Ross said he doesn’t plan to file the papers if more representatives from Thousand Oaks and Bell Canyon enter the race.
“From my perspective, it’s not good to have five board members from Oak Park. I’m just sitting and waiting and encouraging other qualified people to run,” Ross said.
Stark served on the Triunfo board of directors for 24 years. He lost his reelection bid to challenger Michael Paule in the 2008 elections. Paule’s term expires in 2012.
According to the Ventura County registrar’s office, Orkney, Stark, Janke, McReynolds and Tjulander returned their completed application as of Monday. The five other candidates have until 5 p.m. Friday to file.
In Los Angeles County, Las Virgenes Municipal Water District incumbents Glen Peterson, Lee Renger and Jeffrey Smith were unopposed as of Aug. 2.
Las Virgenes Municipal Water District provides potable water, wastewater treatment, recycled water and biosolids composting to more than 65,000 residents in the cities of Agoura Hills, Calabasas, Hidden Hills, Westlake Village and some unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County.
Peterson was elected in 1987 and represents the 2nd division, encompassing unincorporated Los Angeles, portions of Agoura Hills and a small section of Calabasas.
Renger joined the board in 2005 and represents the 3rd district, including portions of Calabasas and unincorporated L.A. County areas east of that city.
Smith was elected in 2006 to represent the 5th District, which covers most of Agoura Hills.
Triunfo and Las Virgenes officials meet once a month as a joint powers authority. They coown the Tapia Water Reclamation Facility and the Rancho Las Virgenes Composting Facility.
