McDreamy to raise funds for cancer research
BREAKAWAY—Film and television actor Patrick Dempsey will pedal through the Conejo Valley on Sun., April 11.
Dust off your bikes. Dr. McDreamy is coming to the Conejo Valley.
Amateur cyclists can enjoy the scenery, challenge their abilities and feel like professional athletes while raising money for nonprofits. And Patrick Dempsey, aka Dr. McDreamy on “Grey’s Anatomy,” will be there, too.
On Sun., April 11, the Breakaway Ride will give cycling enthusiasts and fans a chance to ride the actual Stage 8 route of the 2010 Amgen Tour of California, with a choice of three distances to accommodate various skill and fitness levels. The longest distance covers the same route the pros will ride. Riders will be timed and supported, with a maximum of 3,500 riders per distance.
Riders will also have the opportunity to pedal beside television and film actor Dempsey.
“I am looking forward to reuniting with my friends from Amgen and Breakaway from Cancer to help raise awareness and funds for the nonprofit cancer support organizations,” said Dempsey, whose mother is an ovarian cancer survivor.
The ride raises funds for Breakaway from Cancer, a support network for those with cancer created by Amgen in 2005. The event is a component of Amgen’s sponsorship of the Amgen Tour of California, a professional Tour de France-style cycling road race.
A portion of each rider’s entry fee will be donated to Breakaway from Cancer’s charitable partners—Prevent Cancer Foundation, Cancer Support Community (formerly The Wellness Community), Patient Advocate Foundation and National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship.
Participants in the Breakaway Ride could also earn gifts and prizes by raising additional funds for the event’s partners via the Active Giving program at www.Active.com. The most successful fundraisers will have the opportunity to meet and ride with Dempsey.
Other prizes include VIP experiences at the 2010 Amgen Tour of California, official race merchandise and other cycling-related items. The top fundraiser at the ride will receive a specialized SWorks Tarmac or Roubaix bike.
To register for the Breakaway Ride, go to www.active.com. Three packages, ranging from $125 to $500, are listed for cyclists. Registration continues until 7 a.m. Fri., April 9.
