Scott Drootin, who led the varsity baseball teams at Calabasas, Chaminade and Newbury Park high schools to league titles, will be inducted into the Southern California Jewish Sports Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the Skirball Cultural Center on Sat., Jan. 30.
Drootin, now the head coach at Golden Valley High, is one of 13 new inductees.
Milwaukee Brewers AllStar left fielder Ryan Braun and Los Angeles Lakers guard Jordan Farmar are also among the Hall of Fame class.
Other inductees include Benny Feilhaber (soccer), Sol Hauptman (paddle tennis), Harold Hecht (media), Jillian Kraus (water polo), Louise Lieberman (soccer), Joel Meyers (media), Aaron Rosenberg (football), Jeff Shell (media), Michelle Silver (tenpin bowling) and Steve Soboroff (Pillar of Achievement award).
“It’s a special honor,” Drootin said. “I was shocked and surprised but really excited when I found out. It brings you back to your roots. . . .
“I received this award because of the kids I coached. And I’ve had a lot of great coaches with me over the years.”
In 1995, when his Calabasas team went undefeated in 24 consecutive regular-season games, the Los Angeles Times named Drootin its Coach of the Year.
While at Calabasas, Drootin won three league banners.
In 1997, he coached the Sylmar Stallions to the Palomino World Series crown.
As head coach at Chaminade from 1997 to 2002, Drootin claimed three Mission League championships, including an undefeated league campaign in 2001.
The following year, in 2002, Chaminade was rated No. 1 in the state for small schools by CalHiSports. That season, Drootin was voted one of the most inspirational coaches in America by Jiffy Lube, and the Times and Daily News named him Coach of the Year.
From 2005 to 2008, Drootin was head coach at Newbury Park. In 2005, he was chosen to coach the Bernie Milligan AllStar Game.
One year later, in 2006, and less than two years after he took over the last-place baseball program at NPHS, Drootin led the Panthers to a Marmonte League crown.
Among the Major League players Drootin has coached are Randy Wolf, Jeff Cirillo, Damon Buford, Jeff Suppan, John Garland, Mike Moustakas and the Dodgers’ top prospect, Andrew Lambo.
