      The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura is seeking volunteers for its 18th annual Holiday Homes Tour scheduled from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sat., Dec. 5 and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sun., Dec. 6. The self-guided tour is the cancer support organization’s largest fundraiser of the year.

Hardware thieves locked up
      Members of the Lost Hills Sheriff’s Department Burglar Apprehension Team arrested a Do It Center employee and his girlfriend for stealing merchandise from the Agoura Hills store. The suspects are Douglas Schmachtenberger, 25, and Melane Brock, 23.

Ballard Mountain no longer called ‘Negrohead’
      A mountain peak in Lobo Canyon, listed on government documents as “Negrohead Mountain,” has been officially changed to Ballard Mountain in honor of John Ballard, who is said to have been the first African American to settle in the Santa Monica Mountains.

Renowned conservationist Jane Goodall gives encouragement to Calabasas students
      When Jane Goodall, world-renowned conservationist, visited Calabasas on Monday, she shared with the small crowd her passion for environmentalism. The anthropologist, best known for her 45-year study of chimpanzees in Tanzania, also shared a noise that moved many in attendance: a call made by chimps as they communicate to one another across wide valleys.

Layoffs turn into kids’ art program
      After two Calabasas residents were laid off from their jobs not long ago, they decided to turn their attention to the children of Thousand Oaks and started a business that gives kids the opportunity to express themselves through art.

Competition will end in Agoura Hills
      The Amgen Tour of California bicycle race will finish in the Conejo Valley this year, bringing attention and an economic boost to the cities of Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village and Agoura Hills. The eight-day, 800-mile race will cover 16 cities in California, including the three local host cities in the Conejo Valley.

      More than 600 supporters of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Conejo/Las Virgenes attended the seventh annual Stand Up for Kids dinner and fundraising auction last Saturday in Westlake Village. The clubs serve 1,300 boys and girls from Calabasas to Thousand Oaks. This year’s event was the Four Seasons Hotel.
