Westlake Village tennis team wins title

STRING THEORY—A team of women tennis players from Westlake Village brings home the national title at the U.S. Tennis Association’s Senior National Championships. A women’s tennis team from Westlake Village captured the national title at the U.S. Tennis Association’s Senior National Championships at Indian Wells from Oct. 16 to 18.

The Westlake team defeated a team from Bogart, Ga., 2-1 in the championship match. The Westlake women beat a team from Mount Laurel, N.J., 2-1 in the semifinals.

The team captain is Barbara Page. Team members are Kathy Penrod, Wanda Smythe, Kim Gill, Meg Cindric, Dottie Furillo, Heather Hart, Cathy Lombardo and Cathy English. They use the Westlake Tennis and Swim Club as their home court.

The top four teams in order of finish were Southern California (Westlake Village), Southern, Midwest and Middle States.

This year’s USTA League 4.0 Senior National Championship drew the top 34 teams—17 men’s and 17 women’s—from throughout the nation.

Established in 1980, the USTA League program has grown from 13,000 participants in a few cities in its first year, to more than 711,000 players across the nation today, making it the world’s largest recreational tennis league.
