Council members go unchallenged
Three Westlake Village City Council incumbents have filed to run in the November 2009 election. Mayor Bob Slavin, Mayor Pro-Tem Mark Rutherford and Councilmember Sue McSweeney are seeking reelection. No other residents filed. The deadline was Fri., Aug. 7.
There are no challengers in Agoura Hills City Council race, either. Incumbents Denis Weber, Harry Schwarz and Bill Koehler are running for reelection.
Due to the lack of opposition, the Westlake council will meet at 5 p.m. Aug. 20 to decide whether to hold an election. Not having an election could save the city as much as $25,000. In 2005 Slavin, Rutherford and McSweeney filed unopposed and the city opted to skip the voting.
This would be Slavin’s third, four-year term after being elected in November 2001. Unchallenged four years later, he was appointed to his second term in December 2005. He’s in his second term as mayor, having held the city’s top elected post in 2004.
Rutherford was elected in November 1997 and reelected in November 2001. Like Slavin, he was unchallenged in 2005. Rutherford served as mayor in 2001 and 2005.
Sue McSweeney was elected in November 2001 and was unchallenged in pursuing her second term in 2005. She served as mayor in 2006 and 2007.
There are no term limits for the Westlake City Council.
Agoura Hills has already decided not to have an election.
“We estimated between $40,000 and $45,000 savings for our city,” said Weber, the current mayor.
Weber was elected to the Agoura Hills City Council in 1993 and reelected four times. The 2009 election will mark his fifth term in office.
Koehler and Schwarz were elected in 2005. Koehler will serve a one-year term as mayor in 2010. The mayor is selected annually by the other members of the council.
