Senior Retreat exhibit honors resident’s lifetime achievements

Work of Dr. Robert Shor is showcased

Agoura Hills Senior Retreat has launched a new Citizen of the Month program to recognize residents of the community who have contributed to society and share their accomplishments through exhibits and lectures.

The August honoree is Dr. Robert Shor. Through August, the plaques and pictures that highlight Shor’s lifetime achievement can be viewed at Agoura Hills Senior Retreat, 5217 Chesebro Road, Agoura Hills.

Shor was born in Chicago on April 11, 1921 to Romanian immigrants who worked in the garment industry to support the family. Shor graduated magna cum laude from the University of Illinois and obtain a doctorate from the university’s School of Podiatry.

Shor helped establish the first podiatry clinic for the Los Angeles County Hospital and later for Kaiser Permanente in Los Angeles. He served as president of the American Podiatry Association.

“We have several photographs of dad posing with presidents and senators over the years when he was a lobbyist and involved in legislation,” said Shor’s son Stan, a resident of Calabasas. “He brought the importance of foot care into the limelight.”

Robert Shor also cared for his wife Miriam, who became blind in 1979. While still practicing, the doctor volunteered at the Braille Institute so he could learn more about his wife’s handicap and improve her quality of life. Robert Shor was recently featured on a DVD commemorating the 90th anniversary of the Braille Institute and its volunteers.

The Citizen of the Month exhibit will honor a new individual at the first of each month.
