Surf Point Mugu, get barreled
Registration for the event is open through July 17. The contest takes place Aug. 22-23. The event is open to the public to enter and watch. The official entry form is on the NBVC website at www.cnic.navy.mil/Ventura, under the Community News section. Entry fees are $20 for military and $100 for civilians. There are six categories: Junior Men (17 and under), Open Men, Military Men, Open/Military Women, Bodyboard and Longboard. Participants can enter only one category and are being asked to include a short biography on their surfing history. The contest timeline was increased from one day to two days due to the overwhelming response from entrants last year. One hundred thirtyone surfers entered last year's contest, and more than 1,000 spectators gathered at Mugu to watch the event. Point Mugu is one of Southern California's best surfing locations. This particular surfacing area off the coast of Point Mugu faces in a south direction, which gives it a unique wave. The south swell causes waves to break differently and bigger than at other beaches. The contest is presented by Quiksilver and coordinated by the Navy's Morale Welfare Recreation Department. |
