Kids get to meet the mayor
     FUTURE LEADERS—Westlake Village Mayor Robert Slavin welcomes fourth-grade represenatives Natalie Ungermann, Sam Kanney, Chris Diaz and James Galindo from White Oak Elementary School as part of the city-schools partnership. The program aims to introduce young students to local government.

Ramp metering comes to the 101
      The California Department of Transportation has activated onramp meters on the southbound 101/Ventura Freeway between Rancho Road in Thousand Oaks and Las Virgenes Road in Calabasas. The meters are active Monday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Agoura balances $32-million budget
      Despite the weak economy, the city of Agoura Hills adopted a balanced budget, saving all community services, retaining a multi-million-dollar reserve and continuing its community grant program. City officials presented details of the $32-million budget on June 10.

Learning is global at Oaks Christian
      Learning goes beyond the classroom walls at Oaks Christian High School in Westlake Village. For the past six years students have traveled overseas, volunteering in a variety of capacities in China, Guatemala, Honduras, India, Uganda and Costa Rica. Until this year students prepared for their journey by training once a week for a month before departure.

      The city of Calabasas will host the community's annual Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular at Calabasas High School. Gates open at 5 p.m. and the fireworks show begins at 9 p.m. The family-oriented event will feature the band Jack Mack and the Heart Attack and a free family fun zone with balloon artist, rides and games.

Competing to the beat
     SOPHIA FISCHER/Acorn Newspapers PLAYING THEIR TUNE—The Oak Park High School Jazz Band performs at the Westlake High School Jazz Festival. The school's bands, under the direction of Daniel O'Brien, have participated in several competitions recently. The Concert Band and Wind Ensemble earned second place at the Heritage Festival at Fullerton College, competing against groups from across the U.S and Canada. The Jazz A and Jazz B bands each earned third place at the Moorpark Jazz Festival. Jazz A won fourth place and Jazz B won first place at the Westlake High Jazz Festival.

Calmont kids send care packages to troops
      Students at Calmont School in Calabasas recently collected toiletries, sunscreen, candies and DVDs to ship to the U.S. Army Bravo Company 1-82 serving in Kandahar, Afghanistan. The children also sent along a large blue, hand-decorated sign with words of encouragement such as "Be safe!" and "You are heroes!
