Admiring the land
      During my days of performing land surveying work, I could determine my location on this earth by citing the star Polaris utilizing a transit, by using the tables of an ephemeris, and then by making numerous calculations. That would give me my exact latitude and longitude within 100 feet.

      As other school districts replaced their aging vehicle fleets with hybrids, Oak Park opted for full-size gas guzzling SUVs. Now I read that our tax dollars are going to be used to reroof our local schools with PVC.

Praise for church
      I'd like to "nominate" Westminster Presbyterian Church as our local Citizen of the Year, well, Organization of the Year. It never ceases to amaze me how many different ways this wonderful organization touches our local community, and really demonstrates the ways of being a good neighbor.

No, gun laws don't work
      The Keith Cornell letter titled "Yes, gun laws work" falsely attributes the decline in violence to gun control laws that "came into effect in the 1990s." Although, according to FBI statistics, the annual murder rate in the U.S. dropped from 9.8 per 100,000 population in 1991 to 5.

Gala a success
      On Fri., June 5, The Wellness Community Valley/Ventura celebrated 18 years of providing free programs of support, education and hope to people with cancer and their families. The 18th anniversary "Celebration of Life" gala was an inspirational event and a tremendous success, thanks to the dedication and selfless efforts of this year's event contributors.

Respect separation of church and state
      One of the founding ideas of our country, and one of the reasons that we bailed out of England, is the separation of church and state. Personally I don't want someone else's church doctrine to influence, mandate or control my life and the choices I make for myself. Nor do I feel in a true democracy that my religious beliefs should affect your choices.

      With so much dismal news confronting us, what a pleasure it was to spend an afternoon with the talented young musicians of the Conejo Valley Youth Orchestras at "Eurofest," May 31 at Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza.
