A really Big day

These difficult economic times have been tough for nonprofit organizations who have seen contributions reach new lows. Despite this, when we decided to coordinate a community effort as part of Big Sunday, we were knocked out by the incredible level of support.

Big Sunday, which occurred the first weekend in May, is an apolitical, nondenominational way for people to give back, even for a single day or weekend, to help those less fortunate, and takes place in local projects throughout the L.A. area.

Our local effort took on a big challenge and chose to help the Rescate Family Rescue Center in Canoga Park, a nearby charity that provides food, clothing, medical services and job training to help families in desperate situations; the Los Angeles County Animal Shelters, since pet abandonment has increased significantly during these tough times; Baby Basket California, who provides necessary items for underprivileged new mothers; Operation Gratitude, to support our troops overseas; Zach Bonner, the 11-year-old who is walking from Atlanta to Washington, D.C. to bring attention to the plight of homeless children; the Lung Cancer Foundation of America; Shane's Inspiration universally accessible playgrounds, and local senior homes and care facilities.

We'd like to say "thank you" to everyone who helped in this successful effort, from the families who donated food to the volunteers who dropped in to create a craft project or sort items to the people who helped run the event booths.

Months ago, Diane Hernandez of the Rescate Center had told us of their struggle to keep up and provide services. After Big Sunday, she said for the first time in their 10-year existence they had a fully-stocked food bank and storage area, and couldn't have imagined this happening if it wasn't for the selflessness of those who participated.

We are reminded that no matter how tough things are for each of us, we can always find the time to give back and help others. Dave Moorman and Rabbi Len Muroff Agoura Hills
