Viewpoint scholar, athlete heads to Stanford

Kian Torabian Kian Torabian A scholar, athlete and humanitarian, Kian Torabian's breadth of experience at Viewpoint School in Calabasas has landed him a spot on the Stanford University freshman class roster.

Kian is a National Merit Commended Scholar for top SAT scores, an Advanced Placement Scholar with Honor and a University of California Scholar. He won his school's departmental award in science in ninth grade and in 11th grade captured the award for English. He also excelled as a member of the Science Olympiad team.

A member of the Cum Laude Society, French Honor Society and Science Honor Society, Kian's love of learning is equal to his passion for sports. In his senior year he won an AllVentura County ScholarAthlete award for his skill as a football punter.

Kian joined the junior varsity volleyball team in his freshman year, played soccer for four years and was a member of the First Team All Liberty League for soccer in his junior year. Kian joined the swim team in his senior year.

Tough classes and rigorous sports were not the only activities that catapulted Kian to the top of his class. He co-founded the school's Yoga and Culinary clubs and started an ongoing donation to Habitat for Humanity. In his sophomore year, Kian was a school leader for One Voice, a nonprofit organization that helps families living in poverty. He also volunteers for the Agoura Youth Soccer Organization and West Valley Soccer League.

Kian says his favorite teacher was Dr. De Sal, who introduced him to theater and eventually encouraged his participation in Poetry People, a service group that presents poetry readings at Los Angeles schools.

"I have become a much more confident person because of her," Kian said. He's also grateful for an internship program he participated in during the summer of 2008 under the guidance of reconstructive surgeon Dr. Kouros Azar.
