Luncheon seminar to discuss mind/body connection The effects of stress and anxiety are known to wreak havoc on the human body's emotional and physical health, but some psychologists say that if a person has "somatic awareness" they can reduce the chances of developing full-blown physical ailments. Susan Baker, a licensed marriage and family therapist in Camarillo, will discuss using awareness of the body as a means to reduce anxiety at a June 5 lunchtime meeting sponsored by the Conejo Valley Mental Health Professional Association in Agoura Hills. Signs of stress are often manifested through physical illness, pain or even injury, Baker says. "Too often we tend to ignore pain until it is acute or chronic and requires more intensive intervention," Baker said. "Then it becomes something to be gotten rid of with a pill or other remedy." When people listen to their body signals sooner rather than later natural healing takes place, Baker said. She will share some somatic awareness techniques at the meeting. Simple strategies promote a person's natural capacity to handle stress, she said. Baker will demonstrate a therapeutic approach that supports the body/mind connection and facilitates the healing process. Judy Wiener, a licensed family therapist and member of the association, said the monthly meetings provide an opportunity for mental health professionals and other interested people to learn from the expertise of others. The meeting will be from noon to 1 p.m. at the Teen Outpatient Program, 30343 Canwood St., Ste. 208A, in Agoura Hills on Fri., June 5. There is no charge to attend.
