Students suspended for grade-changing at AHS
Chemistry grades altered using a teacher's computer
      Two students have been suspended from Agoura High School for allegedly changing up to 12 grades in a college prep chemistry class taught by teacher Ann McCartney.

Oak Park bond measure work begins
      Funds from the $29.4-million Measure R school facilities improvement bond that passed in November are being put to use in Oak Park School District. During spring break, seismic safety shut-off gas valves were installed at four schools so that all of the district's campuses now have the devices.

Math intervention helping Oak Park students
      Oak Park Unified School District has started a program to provide extra instruction for elementary school children who struggle with math. Two instructional aides have been hired for each of the elementary school sites.

Water district honors Thomas
      Agoura Hills resident Jess Thomas was honored as the May Citizen of the Month by the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District board of directors at their May meeting. Thomas has been an area resident since the 1960s and has served as president of the Old Agoura Homeowners Association since the early 1980s.

Bay Laurel hosts teacher appreciation week
     WELL DONE—Teachers line up to receive a round of applause for the good job they do at Bay Laurel Elementary School in Calabasas. Last month the school hosted an appreciation week and pampered the teachers by giving them a free massage. Another day was called "love note day" and students were asked to bring in notes, poems and drawings showing their teachers that they care. The week-long event also gave the school a chance to say good-bye to departing principal Karen Hansen, middle, who is retiring from the school district after 28 years.

CTV dials in a winner
      CTV (the Calabasas Channel), the government access channel for the city of Calabasas, won six awards during the annual conference for the States of California and Nevada Chapter of the National Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors in Santa Monica in May.

Two long-time volunteers say goodbye to Oak Park High
      When Gareth Morl and Cody Petersen graduate from Oak Park High School on June 17, their mothers will join them in saying goodbye to the school. Longtime volunteers Gloria Morl and Jhana Petersen have donated hundreds of hours to the school district and its high school in the area of music, athletics and technology.

Oak Park woman uses talent with cameras to help Haitian poor
      An Oak Park woman hopes her hobby—photography and videography—can help improve life for people living in an impoverished area of Haiti. In February, Cindi Gortner spent five days in a remote area of the country to learn more about Haiti Healthcare Partners, the Westlake Villagebased nonprofit that helped create and fund a health clinic in Haiti.

New venue, president for Anza pageant
      The Calabasas Anza Heritage Association announced that a new venue, the Leonis Adobe Museum, will host what is probably the oldest tradition in Calabasas, the Anza en Calabazas 1776 historical pageant. This annual event, presented since 1985, has costumed actors enacting the story of the expedition led by Juan Batista de Anza to bring Spanish settlers to California.

Hands-on 'We the People' program teaches youngsters about government
      Americans should stay informed about their government by reading more and listening to the news, said Nathaniel Driggs, a fifthgrader at Brookside Elementary School in Oak Park. "In the United States, citizens are not required to participate in government, but if they didn't our government would not exist," Nathaniel said.

Trail rehab day set for Circle X Ranch
      The National Park Service will host National Trails Day from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sat., June 6 in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area on Yerba Buena Road. Volunteers of all ages from many local communities will work together to rehabilitate trails at the Circle X Ranch east to Saddle Peak.

Agoura's parks will get a major makeover
      The city of Agoura Hills will make improvements at several parks during general maintenance work over the next six months. Reyes Adobe Park : Six poplar trees have been replaced with eight trees: four majestic red oaks, which have a 200- to 300- year life span, and four tulip trees, a deciduous variety with a 200-year life span.
