'Dangerous' opinion

Responding to the letter, "Homosexuality is a drain on society, given the crises that affect the world today, the calls to stop supporting homosexuality are ridiculous.

The letter represents a dangerous opinion and deserves to be strongly criticized.

To wit: "Gay males have sex on demand without the downside of unwanted children or suits for sexual harassment. That circumstance is an enormous inducement for perpetually horny young males to experiment with homosexuality and unfortunately shortly thereafter become hooked."

With this logic, contraception is harmful to society as well. If your concern is deterrence to sexual behavior, it must also be wrong to work towards curing AIDS. Hopefully people do not support the deaths of millions around the world because it would deter from sexual behavior.

"No children are provided for the next generation to fund Social Security and Medicare for sick and aging gays," and, "The useful DNA of the gay community is lost to the human gene pool."

Does this mean that infertile citizens and those who choose not to have children are also a drain on society?

"Why are we supporting such unproductive activity?"

We are not. We are supporting a society that is tolerant and brushes aside irrelevant differences with the goal of fully embracing the potential of every individual to maximize the advancement of society.

And to do that we must break barriers such as the one the original letter to the editor tries to construct. The desire to arbitrarily exclude people is in fact a much greater drain on society. Ben Schwartz Oak Park
