Deputies swap gifts for guns

Reach Out to Agoura Hills
      The Agoura Hills City Council generally meets the second and fourth Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. at city hall. The city's planning commission meets on the first and third Thursday of every month at 6:30 p.m. Meetings are telecast on Time Warner Channel 10 and Charter Channel 3 daily until the next scheduled meeting.

Nature of Wildworks gearing up for benefit
      The Nature of Wildworks will host a benefit from 2 to 5 p.m. Sun., June 7 at the historic Leonis Adobe Museum, 23537 Calabasas Road, Calabasas. The event will feature a presentation of the wild and exotic animals of Wildworks, a bluegrass concert, a silent auction, hors d'oeuvres, soft drinks, nohost beer and wine bar, tours of the museum and activities for children.

      Twelve local students were selected as finalists in Las Virgenes Municipal Water District's annual Water Awareness Poster Contest. The youths were recognized during a recent water district board of directors meeting and each was presented with a personalized Certificate of Recognition.

      Two 10-year-old boys were snacking on Chinese food earlier this month when they spotted an unusual animal—a lemur. Noah Helfend and Aaron Berdan, both students at Bay Laurel Elementary School, were having a picnic lunch in Aaron's backyard when Noah heard noises.

Academy dancers earn top honors
      Lilly Alexander's Academy of Dance and School of Performing Arts in Westlake Village brought home top honors at the Tremaine Dance Convention/ Competition in Los Angeles. Seven of the nine dances they competed in received first-place awards and two received secondplace trophies.

Top chefs named at Calmont School's annual chili cook-off
      The Folsom family of Lake Sherwood received the firstplace trophy for their chili at the Calmont School second annual Chili Cook Off and Family Fun Day on May 16 in Calabasas. Parents Geoff and Kristen supervised the student chefs, secondgrader Maysen and fourthgraders Jack and Tanner, while they invented a new recipe for Chocolate Chipotle Chili.

      Have you ever done something so life-changing that you just wanted to shout it to the world? Recently, a group of eight local women and I traveled to Kwazulu, South Africa, and I will never be the same. We went to visit an AIDS orphanage called Lily of the Valley. Lily began more than 15 years ago as a hospice to give AIDS orphans a place to die.

      A collection of first edition Ray Bradbury books is on permanent display at the Agoura Hills library. The books were donated by Nan Cano, a longtime English teacher at Agoura High School who is retiring this year.

McGugan was drenched as part of the Beginning Peer Counseling Program's Acts of Kindness Day fundraiser to benefit Many Mansions, Alzheimer's Disease and the American Cancer Society.
