History Day comes to Masson House
      Mountains Restoration Trust will host History Day at Masson Homestead at Headwaters Corner in honor of National Historic Preservation Month. The event is from noon to 4 p.m. Sun., May 31 at Headwaters Corner, 23075 Mulholland Highway in Calabasas.

State superintendent applauds local schools
      State Superintendent of Education Jack O'Connell visited A.E. Wright Middle School on May 5 to celebrate the school's designation as a 2009 California Distinguished School. The California Distinguished School recognition is awarded to schools that have been deemed the "best of the best," A.E. Wright Principal Kimmarie Taylor said.

City of Agoura Hills plans to keep new dog care business on a short leash
      Doggie day care is coming to Agoura Hills. Paul Berkovitz, a West Hills resident, plans to open Camp Bow Wow, a day and overnight canine camp in an existing building on Roadside Drive west of Kanan Road. A city ordinance had prohibited kennels, said Mike Kamino, Agoura Hills director of planning and community development.

Community backs teen with cancer
      Concerned community members are about to show their heartfelt support for Taylor Messina, a 15-year-old Oak Park girl stricken with a rare form of cancer. Taylor was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic midline carci noma in March and had two surgeries to remove her ovaries and the tumors that had spread to her lung.

Casino Night brings in money for charity
      The Westlake Village Junior Women's Club and Tarzana Treatment Center raised more than $25,000 during the annual spring fundraiser on May 2 at Padri Restaurant & Martini Bar in Agoura Hills. The sold-out Casino Night began with cocktails and traypassed hors d'oeuvres, followed by an Italian buffet dinner.

      Almost anyone who has taken part in Oak Park recreation programs over the years has met Jo Lassak. She's the woman who's directed the community's recreation service since it began more than 20 years ago at Brookside Elementary School and Mae Boyar Park on Conifer Street.

YMCA delegates to Model United Nations go global
      A seven-member delegation from the Triunfo YMCA took part in the Youth and Government Model United Nations' annual conference in Burbank April 30 through May 3. The conference was the culmination of four months of training in which the delegation researched and represented Iraq and the Ukraine at the gathering.

National Charity League introduces 2009 Senior Ticktockers
      The Conejo Valley Chapter of the National Charity League (NCL) introduced its 2009 Debutantes as part of its annual New Member and Debutante Announcement Tea on Sun., May 17 at Sherwood Country Club. The Debutantes along with the Senior Ticktockers have contributed more than 9,400 collective hours during their sixyear membership in NCL.

Calabasas named Tree City USA
      Calabasas has been named a Tree City USA for the 11th year by the Arbor Day Foundation to honor its commitment to a community forestry. Calabasas has met the four standards to obtain this honor: have a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive community forestry program and an Arbor Day observation and proclamation.
