Time for action

I feel it necessary to clarify what I communicated at the recent community meeting regarding cancer rates in Oak Park.

My quote in The Acorn, "We can't leave here and not do anything," followed the many requests and questions at the meeting regarding what we can do as residents and how we can make our concerns and voices be heard. The last thing I wanted was for us to leave the meeting and be complacent about what we just heard.

There was enough concern in that room, that if we all did something about it—write letters and e-mails to the governor, lobbyists, the EPA—instead of nothing, then we stand a bigger and better chance of being heard.

The speakers, Christina Walsh and William Bowling, gave us direction and insight as to what we can and should do. Taking action, whether big or small, is vital to keep the momentum going and obtain answers if that's what we want to achieve.

We have a lot more to hear and learn about this. The discussion, evidence brought before us, questions being asked and remarks being made were overwhelming. As citizens of this great community, if we want answers to these tough concerns and questions, it's up to us to seek them.
