Agoura grad Matthews drafted by Green Bay Clay Matthews III is going to play for one of the most storied franchises in all of sports. The 2004 Agoura High graduate and former USC walk-on was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the first round, pick No. 26, during last Saturday's NFL Draft. Green Bay traded three picks—a second-rounder and two third-round selections—to the New England Patriots to move back into the first round to take Matthews, an outside linebacker. Following the selection, Matthew told Tom Fanning of Packers.com, "Having a team move up to draft you really shows they have an interest in you and they want you on their team and they are looking forward to you making an impact. . . . "I'm very much pleased to end up in Green Bay," he said. A pair of local quarterback prospects, Ben Olson of UCLA and Arizona State's Rudy Carpenter, were not drafted. Following a storied high school career at Thousand Oaks in which he was named Parade All-American, Olson struggled with multiple injuries while attending UCLA. Carpenter, the fiery gunslinger who played at both Newbury Park and Westlake, saw his draft stock slip considerably following a tough senior season at ASU. Carpenter agreed to a free agent contract with the Dallas Cowboys on Monday. |
