Las Virgenes schools must explain budget moves
      For the third time since Assembly Bill 1200 passed in 1991, the Las Virgenes Unified School District must file a "qualified" interim budget with state officials explaining why the district might not meet its financial obligations for the next three years.

Calabasas turns heat on tobacco sales
      The Calabasas City Council is considering an ordinance that would levy a $1,000 fine to retailers who sell tobacco to minors. A new, Calabasas tobacco retailer licensing program will require any retailer selling tobacco in the city to be licensed.

Habitat to the Max lends a hand
      St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church's Habitat for Humanity Ministry has taken on the challenge of building homes for people working below the poverty level. The volunteer group, called Habitat to the Max, is building its second home—a duplex—for two families in Ventura County and raising additional funds through its annual dinner dance and auction.

Local horse trainer preaches gentle psychology
      Chip Mandeville has the ability to train horses with gentle psychology rather than force. The local horse trainer offered tips and techniques to equestrians at a horsemanship clinic March 14 at Old Agoura Equestrian Park. The training was part of a fundraising effort for the Old Agoura Homeowners Association, said resident Mary Keenan.

      Supporters of the Agoura Relay For Life have an opportunity to do something special for cancer patients, by donating hair that can be made into wigs for female chemotherapy patients. Summa Salon of Agoura Hills will be on site at the relay to cut the hair of any man or woman who wishes to donate their ponytail for the worthy cause.

Westlake Village resident sees bright future in solar power
     UP ON THE ROOF—Workers put the finishing touches on solar panel installation at the home of Mark Brutzkus, a Westlake Village resident. Because the work can be costly, Brutzkus decided to save money by leasing his panels from a Culver City company called SolarCity. The same style of thin-film panels were used for a recent home renovation on ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition." Brutzkus estimates the reflective, black glass solar panels will give him $25 to $50 in monthly savings. In general, solar leasing packages will vary depending on up-front fees, government rebates, local utility rates and length of contract.
