      Oak Park High School announced new costcutting measures that will help the school fight the rough economic downturn. The high school's new conservative approach to spending has begun immediately. "We need to come together as a school to save our pennies," Principal Andi Mallen said.       Thousand Oaks residents won't have to drive to Simi Valley or Camarillo to enjoy a movie with stadium seating once the 107,930-square-foot, three-story Muvico Theater opens at The Oaks mall, tentatively on Fri., Feb. 27. The opening has been delayed twice.

      The Calabasas Environmental Commission has named five recipients of the Carl Gibbs Environmental Excellence Award. The award was named after the late environmental commissioner who served at city hall for 15 years. "Carl Gibbs dedicated his life to the environment and to educating people," said Stuart Cohen, chair of the environmental commission.

Young naturalists gather
     FOXY LADY—Above, Thousand Oaks resident Jordanna Witt, 12, gets a close-up look at an Island Fox at the Mountains Restoration Trust Interpretive Center last Saturday. A group of local children participated in the monthly Youth Naturalist Program and were treated to a hike, crafts and a presentation by Friends of the Island Fox Inc. Participants learned about what makes a species endangered, habitat loss and native plants. Wildlife center desperate for funds
      After 10 years in operation treating more than 16,000 animals, the California Wildlife Center near Calabasas is low on funds and has only six weeks of operating expenses left in the bank. "We operate on a shoestring budget and it is critical for us to be prepared for baby season," said Victoria Harris, the center's director.

Code talker coming to Calabasas
     STORIES TO TELL—World War II Navajo code talker Joe Morris will speak from 1 to 3 p.m. Sat., Feb. 28 at the Leonis Adobe Museum Adobe House, 23537 Calabasas Road, Calabasas. Code talkers used a code based on the Navajo language to transmit communications during the war. The program is free to museum members, $5 for nonmembers. For information, call (818) 222-6511.

      A new youth council for students ages 10 to 17 has been formed in Agoura Hills, recreation supervisor Meredith Petit announced. "The Agoura Hills Youth Council is a reestablished version of the old teen advisory committee, which was dissolved about five years ago," Petit said.

      The board of trustees of the Community Foundation for Oak Park appointed Jay Kapitz as a new trustee on Feb. 10. Kapitz has been active in the Oak Park community and also serves on the Oak Park Municipal Advisory Council, which he chaired in 2008.

Surf City, here they come
     ON YOUR MARKS—Runners crowd the start of the Surf City Marathon in Huntington Beach Feb. 1. Barry Wallman, 57, of Camarillo, finished first in his age group as he completed in a marathon for the 89th month in a row. His time was 3:01:36. Tammy Sue Roberts of Calabasas also competed in the Surf City half-marathon. Roberts recently had surgery for a brain tumor, but she sill placed 6,345 out of 10,790 runners overall. Racers used the event to raise money for Free Wheelchair Mission, a nonprofit group that provides wheelchairs to people in developing countries.
