Memorial Saturday for young leukemia victim
      A community memorial has been scheduled for 10 a.m. Sat., Feb. 7 at Oak Canyon Park in Oak Park to remember the life of Cody Badalato, a Medea Creek eighthgrader who died of leukemia. The handsome, athletic and outgoing teenager appeared healthy until the night of Dec. 7, 2008 when he suddenly couldn't breathe and suffered cardiac arrest.

Forums scheduled in Calabasas Council election
      Calabasas residents have two more opportunities in the coming weeks to meet and question the candidates for City Council. Three seats are up for election on the council. The vote is March 3. The Calabasas Village Homeowners Association will host "Meet the Candidates" from 2 to 4 p.m. Sat., Feb. 7 at the Calabasas Village Clubhouse.

LVMWD board sworn in
      Joseph Bowman and Charles Caspary recently took the oath of office marking the start of new four-year terms as members of the board of Las Virgenes Municipal Water District. Bowman represents Division 4, which includes a portion of Agoura Hills, Westlake Village and adjacent unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County. He joined the LVMWD board in 2002.

The hiring will continue through 2010
      The United States Census Bureau is gearing up for next year's gathering of information on American households, and parttime census takers are now being hired. According to Carolyn Wallace, a recruiting assistant for the Santa Monica/Malibu Census area, the bureau needs to hire hundreds of local people to help in the gathering of information about the U.S.

      An article about the trial of Diana Shakhov had an error in the edition of Jan. 22. The first case ended in a mistrial after the jury deadlocked 9-3 for an acquittal. Shakhov was driving a car that rear-ended another vehicle on June 2, 2003 on Thousand Oaks Boulevard.

      A new Calabasas graffiti ordinance will hold parents financially responsible for children who are caught tagging and will hold storeowners and merchants accountable for selling graffitimaking implements such as crayons, stickers and felt-tip markers.

Oak Park woman makes own second chances
      The tragedy in her life has prompted one Oak Park woman to pursue a new start for herself and for others. She calls her cause "Second Chances." Zoya Bokhoor lost her husband to cancer in 2002. He was 57. Two years later her only child died from a combination of prescription medication and alcohol. He was 24 years old and had just completed law school.

      YEARS OF SERVICE— The Calabasas Chamber of Commerce leadership honors Arlene Bernholtz, above center, with its Bill Van Gieson Community Service Award on Jan. 30. Bernholtz spent 13 years as the Chamber's membership and marketing director before retiring.

Badminton courts come to community center
      The Agoura Hills/Calabasas Community Center will be installing six new badminton courts for public play in the spring. Lessons and competition will begin as soon as the courts are installed and the lines are painted, with a target time of mid-April.

Local man uses sweat equity to support Make-A-Wish, other good causes
      Most of us would never consider running the distance between Moorpark and the Malibu pier, but Greg Jones has traveled this 30-mile route on foot several times over the past year. The 28-year-old Moorpark resident who grew up in Oak Park is training for the San Diego 100mile Endurance Run in the Cuyamaca Mountains near San Diego on June 6 and 7.

      The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps has openings for a limited number of young people ages 11 to 17 to join the crew of Langley Division. The corps is composed of young people who have an interest in seamanship, the military, or other seagoing careers.

Firefighters receive financial support
      The Ventura County Fire Department recently received two grants from the Fireman's Fund Insurance Company. The fire department has received more than $120,000 in grant money from Fireman's Fund during the last two years through the company's philanthropic mission of supporting local fire departments across the country.
